This was an absolute disaster.

They were doing group projects again, in pairs instead of in trios, and normally that wouldn't be a problem. Normally Alya would be here and they would work together. But Alya was absent, and Nino was absent too, and their instructor decided to pair the class up rather than letting them pick their partners.

And, as luck would have it, her partner was none other than Adrien Agreste. There is a part of her that was thrilled by this, but mostly, she was terrified.

Marinette just knew that, instead of saying anything vaguely intelligent, she was going to look right at his stupid, handsome face and the only thing out of her mouth would be "Abluh bluh bluh." That's if she's lucky. If she's unlucky, it would be something even more embarrassing like, "Please marry me, I already have names picked out for three of our kids." With a lot more stuttering and stammering, and some awkward laughter and dumb faces, and he would be so weirded out by her that he would never want anything to do with her ever again.

Why isn't Alya here? was the only thought going through her mind as she stared at the back of Adrien's head. She needed to stop staring. She really needed to stop staring, because he was bound to turn around and look at her soon, and she didn't want to make any worse of an impression than she was already going to.

If Alya was here, her friend would be able to coach her through working with Adrien. If Alya was here, maybe she wouldn't even be working with Adrien at all.

She was so caught up in her panic that she only just barely managed to catch the rest of their teacher's instructions. She was assigning topics, as well, and they were to look up current events andโ€”

"Adrien and Marinette, the two of you will be reporting on the exploits of Ladybug and Chat Noir."

Marinette's jaw dropped and she sank lower and lower into her seat. Of all the rotten luck...

She didn't really hear as the teacher gave out topics to the rest of the class, but once she was done, she knew she couldn't hide behind her desk any longer. She took a deep breath, pulled herself up, and willed herself to try and get at least one coherent sentence out to Adrien.

"So, we'reโ€” We're partners, huh?"

Inwardly, she winced at how awkward and stilted the words sounded, but at least they were actually words and not embarrassing, incoherent noises.
